LAB EXPECTATIONS

As Student Scientists we are:
Collaborators, Creators, Curious Thinkers,
Engineers, Explorers, Learners, Mindful Makers, and Problem Solvers!

My expectation of each student is to ask questions, explore ideas, make observations, learn from those experiences (including our mistakes) and adapt our thinking!

We have one rule in lab:

Blue pennant flag with the word "RESPECT" in large outlined letters, attached to a wooden pole.

It’s important to me to create a fun inclusive learning environment and in order to do that, all students must show respect towards ourselves, our classmates, our teachers, our classroom and our supplies.

Lab safety guidelines: only touch supplies when told, listen and follow directions, never taste in science class, use supplies carefully, report accidents, be respectful to lab partners; with icons for each tip.

How often do our students have Science?

In WCUSD, our elementary science program is thoughtfully designed to provide students with consistent, hands-on, NGSS-aligned science instruction. We use two high-quality curricula: STEMscopes for grades TK–2 and Amplify Science for grades 3–5.

Each week, students engage in science through two instructional experiences:

- One day of classroom-based instruction led by their teacher, focused on building content knowledge and scientific thinking.

- One day in the science lab, where students participate in hands-on investigations that deepen their understanding through exploration and application.

During lab days, the classroom teacher and science lab instructor work together to co-facilitate learning. This collaborative model ensures that students experience high-engagement, inquiry-based learning that reinforces and extends classroom instruction. At the end of each unit, students are assessed by their teacher on participation and how well they understand the science concepts.
